Local Artist Uses Newspapers to Create Political Work: Now Featured at Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts

SAN FRANCISCO - Bay Area artist Rafael Bensuaski Vieira examines the plight of the American people as the nation rolls further into recession in his work currently on display at an annual juried exhibition at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco.
Vieria's piece, consisting of collage and drawing, incorporates several newspapers, including the Financial Times, New York Times, and San Francisco Chronicle, as he captures America's current state of flux. The work is part of the Cultural Center's Experimental Political Cartoon Drawing/Photography Exhibition on display through September 12, 2008.

The piece, entitled "Opened Envelopes," is a politically charged work

examining issues taking place in the United States that affect the

larger global community. In it, Current President George W. Bush is

pushing the dollar against the wind, waved on by China and followed by

Senator and Republican presidential candidate John McCain as Chester

the Dog. Behind Bush and McCain, George Washington enjoys the Last

Supper of a strong dollar in an unemployment line.

Big Oil looms in the center with America's problems bleeding out from

it—from the unnecessary deaths in Iraq to the destructive

environmental damage occurring. The heavy burden U.S. immigrants carry

in the current economic crisis is depicted by ICE raids and laborers

limited to menial jobs. Meanwhile, Republicans gnaw away at Uncle Sam,

and cast shadows consist of question marks regarding America's future.
